Professional Education and Training

Nationally Accredited Training Courses

The Australian Childhood Foundation is committed to providing professional education that is high quality, current and practically related to the work of health, welfare and education professionals across Australia.

This commitment includes the range of nationally recognised qualifications offered by the Foundation as a Registered Training Organisaton.

On this page you will find an overview of the courses offered and information you might require as a prospective student. The Foundation currently offers 3 accredited courses:

Vocational Graduate Certificate in Developmental Trauma

The Australian Childhood Foundation is proud to offer the only nationally accredited vocational qualification in Australia exploring neurobiology, trauma and practical interventions based on those frameworks and theoretical constructs.  This course has been developed in a direct response to the health, education and welfare sectors’ requests for an accredited course which resources the work of those already professionally supporting abused and traumatised children and young people and their families.

The Vocational Graduate Certificate in Developmental Trauma provides a post graduate specialist qualification for those working with children who have experienced abuse, trauma and violence. It seeks to increase and enhance skills and knowledge to work effectively with children and young people.

This qualification also provides recognition of professional development and knowledge of neurobiology and trauma based practice through an accredited course and will build the overall knowledge base of professionals working with children and young people who are traumatised and may be living in a range of settings. Equally, at a broader level, it begins to formalise a starting point for a common language of response framework across the education, welfare and health sectors.

The course has been successfully completed by professionals in Melbourne and Adelaide- who evaluated the course highly.

In 2012, the course will be available in Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. You can click here to download an Information Kit in the state of your choice.

This is the only nationally accredited vocational qualification dealing with trauma available in Australia.

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAE40110

This qualification is the industry standard for those facilitating training and assessment- particularly accredited qualifications within the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. It is a clearly articulated qualification that builds skills and knowledge to both train and assess in a workplace competency based model, with the context of the VET sector.

The Australian Childhood Foundation ensures that this course acknowledges and incorporates the skills and work history of those in education, health and welfare.

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment provides a significant professional development opportunity for those interested in any kind of training role in their workplace.

The course can also be provided for whole staff groups as a customised program.  To discuss this option, please contact the Program Manager, Marina Dickson at training@childhood.org.au

Certificate IV in Child, Youth and And Family Intervention (Residential and Out of Home Care)

This qualification provides the industry standard for those working in residential and out-of-home care. The course seeks to build the knowledge and skills to professionally support children and young people in out-of-home care. It is aimed at new staff entering the out-of-home care system as well as providing formal recognition to those already experienced in working in residential and out-of-home care but without a qualification.

The facilitation of the course by the Australian Childhood Foundation incorporates the extensive knowledge and experience of the organisation in providing a range of therapeutic care models, including therapeutic residential and foster care, across Australia.

In 2012 this course will only be offered as a customised program for groups of staff working in the residential care system.  If you are seeking to build the skills and capacity of your team, contact Marina Dickson at training@childhood.org.au
